Write it down

March 2021

When you learn something worth remembering, write it down.

You'll better understand what you learned. The process of writing forces you to clarify your thoughts, which often leads to making unexpected connections and recognizing interesting implications. You might even realize that you didn't actually learn what you thought you did.

You'll also be more likely to remember the lessons. When you write something in your own words, it sticks with you in a much different way than if you hear or read it. An added bonus: if you constantly edit your writing, you'll end up reading your lessons over and over, which helps solidify them.

Writing in public also allows others to learn from you or give you feedback, which further refines your understanding.

Where and how you write your learnings are personal. I write some on my website, but I write more personal ones on index cards that I leave next to my bed. I read a random learning most mornings and spend a minute reflecting on it. Then I look for opportunities to apply it.
